Seeing a Consultant

A referral to the Regional Fertility Centre will be in one person's name, although the consultation is for both you and your partner, so it is essential that you attend the appointment together.

When you arrive for your appointment, you will need to fill in some forms before you see the consultant, so you should arrive 15 minutes before your appointment time to do this.

During your initial consultation with the doctor, they will start by taking a detailed history from both patients to gather as much background information as possible.

At this first appointment, the woman will usually have a transvaginal ultrasound (internal) scan of the pelvis carried out to assess the womb and ovaries.

Other investigations which may be arranged are:

  • Detailed semen analysis
  • FSH and Oestradiol levels – taken on day 2 or 3 of the cycle
  • BMI measurement (female)

Welfare of the Child

The RFC is required to take account of the welfare of any child born as a result of fertility treatment in a licenced centre or any other child who may be affected by the birth. To enable us to do this all patients attending for their initial consultation will be asked to complete a short questionnaire. (see hfea website for more details)

Please note, when a female member of staff is requested by a patient, we will make every effort to accomodate this request, however no guarantee can be given that a female member of staff will be available for any specific appointment.
